The Japanese Film Festival is also an opportunity to find out more about Japanese language and culture, through the medium of film.

With this in mind, we have organised two daytime screenings of the newly released Hinokio (PG) and acclaimed Hidden Blade (MA 15+) in Sydney, to cater for student group visits.

Friday 2 December 10:30 am

After an accident, Satoru stopped going to school, spending his days confined to his room. His sole link with the outside world is through a robot named Hinokio, which Satoru manipulates via his computer. Through the eyes of Hinokio, Satoru finds out about real life and friendship, and discovers his first love. This is a touching story which takes the robot theme to a completely new level.

Hinokio: Pre-screening Event 10 am

Prior to the screening of Hinokio, there will be a special guest appearance by two of the 3D animators who worked on the film. This is an ideal opportunity for students to find out about what goes into making an animated feature film. The presentation will include exclusive footage, storyboards and CG models as well as some Q&A time.
* Free event (with ticket purchase for the 10:30 am session of Hinokio)

This Japanese Academy Award Winner for Best Art Direction is another samurai masterpiece from Yoji Yamada (Twilight Samurai; Tora-san series). This period drama is set in the dying days of feudal Japan when the demise of the samurai class is imminent. Like the acclaimed Twilight Samurai, this is not action-packed but rather an introspective and understated film. Viewers will enjoy the comic moments and subtle romance.
